AMERICAN GINSENG HISTORY AND USE

AMERICAN GINSENG-Panax quinquefolium

Description: Ginseng is a native American plant which grows in moist cool hardwood  forests in the United States and Canada. Ginseng grows wild, but also is cultivated in the woods and is grown under artificial shade.

I am acquainted with all three methods. Living in the Appalachian Mountains I've dug wild ginseng for over 20 years. I've also tried cultivating ginseng in the woods and under artificial shade.

History: Ginseng has been dug and exported to China from the United States since the mid 1700's, and China has been using it for thousands of years. The American Indians used ginseng for medicinal purposes before the United States were colonized. Daniel Boone was active in the purchasing and export, and it was a lucrative business in those days.

Medicinal Use: Ginsengs active ingredients are called saponins, or ginsenosides. American ginseng (panax quinquefolium) has saponin content similar to Oriental ginseng (Panax ginseng), however American ginseng normally contains higher amounts of saponins in its root. According to various studies ginseng has been shown to help in the following:

-Reducing cholesterol

-Reducing heart attacks, by reducing blood clots

-Minimizing cell damage from radiation

-Protecting the liver

-Reducing blood sugar levels in controlling diabetes

-Stimulating the immune system

-Energy booster and memory enhancer

Consumption: Ginseng may be consumed in various ways. Capsules containing the powdered root may be taken, also teas ( your daily dose simmered in a cup of water with or without flavorings or honey). Tinctures, in which ginseng is placed into a liquid usually alcohol for a period of time allowing its active ingredients to be transferred to the liquid. The simplest method of consumption is using the whole root which you chew on a piece of root (which takes several minutes to soften) enough to consume. You may also add a little powdered ginseng to a slowly cooked food dish, such as soup.

Dosage: Normal dosage prescribed by many herbal doctors is 2-3 grams (28 grams = one ounce) per day. Some herbalist recommend a cycle of two months on ginseng taken daily, and two months off. Alternately you can use ginseng 3 days a week continuously. However with either system you use ginseng should be taken for a few months to receive its full benefits.
